Phantom Blade Zero Missables: What You Only Get Once

The short version: there’s no single catastrophic missable in this game, but there’s a long tail of “miss it and replay a chapter” items.

Most of what you can skip is recoverable on a second playthrough (NG+), at the cost of another twenty hours. Exactly two things cannot be recovered: defeating Bai Chilian in Chapter 4, and fighting Leng Tu without clearing all five Long Pillars. After Bai Chilian, every NPC in the Outpost and the Thieves’ Camp changes state — their questlines and rewards are locked for the rest of the run. After Leng Tu, the ending is already settled and the true ending is gone for this run.

So this list works in two layers: memorize those two deadlines, then tick off the rest by region.

The two points of no return

Bai Chilian, Lady of the Twin Serpents (Chapter 4 · Snake’s Reflection)

Beat her and the residents of the Outpost and the Thieves’ Camp become maskless. They aren’t turned hostile as a punishment — they simply change. Every side quest, conversation, and reward tied to those NPCs is closed for the remainder of the playthrough.

This isn’t “you might miss something.” It’s “you will miss those things, the moment you win.”

She’s also the Chapter 2 gate boss, and she drops the White Serpent & Crimson Viper — the backbone of fast dual-wield play. You’re going to fight her eventually. The only question is whether the camps are cleared first.

Checklist before you start the fight:

※ The last two have an earlier deadline than Bai Chilian. Reporting back to Gen and Lan has to happen before you enter Pangzhen, not before you beat her. Push too far ahead and the quest fails on the spot.

The five Mo Yuan fights — hard requirement for the true ending

Three endings, decided by two side quests: Secrets at the Heart of the Lake and Bloodline Awakening. The ending locks the moment the fight against Leng Tu starts. The five Long Pillars are Bloodline Awakening — do both quests and you get the true ending (the extra Zuo Shang: True Dragon form); do only the lake quest and it is Long’s Roar; skip it and it is Annihilation. Walk into the Leng Tu fight without clearing the pillars and the true ending is gone for this run — replay required.

  • What to do: win all five pillar trials. Fight-by-fight locations, prerequisites, and rewards are on Mo Yuan, all five fights
  • When it closes: the moment the Leng Tu fight starts — it is not settled after you win it
  • Can you go back? Not this run. Even if you clear the pillars afterwards, this playthrough’s ending is already decided
  • What you get anyway: beating the fifth pillar also completes Bloodline Awakening and unlocks the Phantom and Blade silver trophy
  • The other hard deadline: the bridge on Pangzhen’s back street that leads to the Mirage Estate — cross it before Secrets at the Heart of the Lake is done and several Crimson Forest bells can no longer be re-entered (GamerSky’s list: Mirrorwood Depths, Yizhong, Mist Cleared, the Giant Tree Wound in Silk, and the Crimson Forest Sha-Chi Tower — that last one is the Crimson Forest tower, not the Weeping Creek Valley tower, and the Mirrorwood pillar bell is not on the list). Clear the rest of the Crimson Forest first

Accessories worth going back for

These are the ones players most often miss. None are hard to find — they just demand you come back at the right time.

Boulderguard

  • Effect: reduces damage taken by 15% while not Guard-Broken
  • Location: Weeping Creek Valley — find the frightened Mandate disciple hiding behind a crate at the Outpost, defeat Peng Meng the Axemaster, then return and speak to him. Dig up the grave on the small mound near the Axemaster’s Holding Cell.
  • Miss condition: unavailable once you reach the Crimson Forest (Game8 and GamerSky both state the Crimson Forest cutoff)
  • Take it: always. One of the most broadly useful damage-reduction accessories in the game.

Hunyuan Meridian Instrument

  • Effect: increases the timing windows for Parry and Perfect Dodge by 15% (+25% polished)
  • Location: Weeping Creek Valley, Sha-Chi Tower base. From the Creek Valley Plains Entrance, through the camp’s outer gate, down and left, through the large building’s door into the cave, then left and down the stairs to the tower base. Use the Sha-Chi Furnace Inspection Crank on the crank slot to open the chest.
  • Miss condition: the tower area changes as the story advances; recoverable on NG+
  • Take it: if your hands shake. A 15% wider parry window is a real feel change, and it’s a core piece of the 100% damage-reduction cheese build.

Ancient Armor Fragment

  • Effect: the higher your HP, the greater the damage reduction, up to 20% at full health (up to 40% polished)
  • Location: Weeping Creek Valley, near the Crimson Manor
  • Miss condition: effectively tied to early chapter-one exploration; late backtracking otherwise
  • Take it: damage-reduction builds.

Livingwood Talisman

  • Effect: Bleed and Life Steal are 50% effective against Puppets, Phantoms, and Golden Bodies
  • Location: from the Thieves’ Camp dungeon, follow the path down to the bottom, into the house in the yard, open the chest
  • Miss condition: same region as A Healer’s Mercy — run both in one trip
  • Take it: mandatory for Outlaw Warblade users. The Warblade’s lifesteal does nothing to Puppets, Phantoms, or Golden Bodies without this.

Seal of Dugu

  • Effect: increases Sha-Chi depletion from Sha-Chi Combos
  • Location: Crimson Forest, Secrets of the Baishan Sect — a hidden dialogue option. Pick the right branch and you get it; pick wrong and it’s gone.
  • Miss condition: wrong dialogue choice, or quest never started
  • Take it: Sha-Chi combo builds.

The Quick Hand set

  • Quick Hand Pendant: rescue Quick Hand Zhang from his cage, then meet him at his hideout → +10% one-handed weapon damage
  • Ignoring him = losing the pendant outright. Game8 lists this as a missable in its own right.
  • Quick Hand Pair / Quick Hand Might: 30,000 each, bought from him
  • The vault: needs the Bastion Phantom Edge to open

Miraculous Scabbard

  • Effect: switching main weapons grants Super Armor and 40% damage reduction for 3 seconds (25% / 2s unpolished)
  • Location: drops from The Gold-Masked One, second encounter
  • Miss condition: the Gold-Masked One appears four times — clear them all and it’s yours
  • Take it: weapon-swapping Sha-Chi builds.

Side quests: they die on chapter boundaries

What NG+ actually recovers

This is the part most people get wrong, so, plainly:

  • Recoverable: nearly every missable accessory and side quest. The community consensus is that NG+ lets you re-collect them — that’s what “you’ll have to wait for a second playthrough” actually means.
  • Not recoverable: the NPC questlines closed off by Bai Chilian. Game8 states plainly that those NPCs are wiped and replaced.
  • True ending: decided by two side quests — Secrets at the Heart of the Lake and Bloodline Awakening, and Bloodline Awakening means winning all five pillar trials (see section one). Miss them this run and you replay. The pillars are optional fights, so NG+ can cover them — consistent with the accessory rule above, but there is no per-item testing source, so treat it as unverified.
  • Unverified: whether every individual accessory is 100% re-collectable on NG+. There’s no per-item testing source, so we don’t claim it.

※ This is why people say “one playthrough and you wasted it.” Not because anything is permanently gone — because you have to run another twenty hours. The second run is faster, but it’s still real time.

FAQ

I’m halfway through and I already missed something. Is it over?

Not necessarily. Check two things: have you beaten Bai Chilian (if not, you’re fine — go back, clear the camps, then progress), and have you fought Leng Tu (that fight settles the ending on the spot, so if you haven’t cleared all five pillars this run, the true ending moves to NG+). If you have beaten Bai Chilian, those NPC quests are gone for this run, but most accessories can be recovered on NG+.

Everyone says “don’t rush the story.” Which deadlines exactly?

Most dangerous first: before entering Pangzhen (report back to Gen and Lan) → before defeating Jing Ye (Apprentice Healer) → before the Crimson Forest’s final boss (Purge the Sect, A secret that can’t be spoken) → before Bai Chilian (A Healer’s Mercy, Honor Among Thieves, accepting Secrets of the Baishan Sect).

Where exactly is the Boulderguard? I can’t find it.

In the Weeping Creek Valley Outpost — look for the scared disciple behind a crate. You must defeat Peng Meng the Axemaster first. Then go back, talk to him, and dig up the grave on the mound near the Axemaster’s Holding Cell.

Is there a definitive answer on whether each accessory is recoverable in NG+?

Not per-item, no. The community consensus is that they are. We won’t make promises on the game’s behalf — anything we’re unsure of gets marked unverified.
